Big right hander Harold Harris Vandenberg was born in Abilene, Kansas on March 17, 1906. Made his major league debut at the age of 19 with the Boston Red Sox on June 8, 1935. Pitched for the New York Giants for four years from '37 to '40. Served in the Armed Forces from '41 to '44. Returned to professional baseball, striking 54 batters in 126 innings for the Cubs in 1944. In 1945 he started and relieved, going 6-3, and pitched for the Cubs in three World Series games. Left Chicago in 1946 to join the Oaks in the PCL.
